Charity Flag Football Event November 17 Millis MA Buddy Bowl

This is the 4th year that Millis MA will host a Buddy Bowl.    You need not be a Millis Resident to play.   In fact, the more participants, the more fun, so come on down and let's play some football!  

What's a Buddy Bowl?

A Buddy Bowl is a charity flag football tournament that began long ago back in 1977 in San Diego CA when a bunch of guys got together to play football.   It has since mushroomed into a tax deductible non profit where the money goes to support and help injured military and law enforcement personal and their families.   These tournaments are played all over the US.   People have fun while helping to raise money for this very good cause.

This will be the 4th year that a tournament will be held in Millis MA.
The Buddy Bowl is for Kids and Adults, Male and Female.  If you don't have a team, they will hook you up with an age appropriate one.    This makes it easy for your entire family or a bunch of friends to get involved!

Is this House Haunted?     Stigmatized Properties

Properties that have been the site of a murder, suicide death or a haunting have long been considered "stigmatized".

As a Seller are you required to disclose this known fact to a potential purchaser?   As a purchaser do you feel you should be told of such an event? 


A conversation this evening with friends found us all over the board on this issue.  Clearly some feel it is no big deal while others feel the opposite.

This is Massachusetts.   Arguably the oldest community in America.    We have lots of old homes and if we remember correctly, at the very least, many of these old homes hosted  "calling hours" for the dead.    Not as dramatic as a murder for sure, but still for some an unusual and uncomfortable situation.   It puts us in a very interesting situation.

So, that being said...this brings up a few questions. Would you consider purchasing one of these properties?   Does it affect the price your are willing to pay?  As a Seller are you obligated to offer up this information to a prospective purchaser?     How about your Realtor?   What can you expect of her/him?

The reality is that Massachusetts Realtors are not obligated to disclose this type of information to you.    A law enacted in 1998 is clear on the issue. 

There are other properties that may be considered stigmatized where other rules apply, (including HIV status  of former or current occupants), but for this conversation,  as a Buyer, if it is an important you know that someone was murdered or committed suicide in a property, or that a ghost resides there, then you should ask questions pertaining to this type of event.   Your questions will trigger a duty to disclose.

Kind of weird, I know, and it is sort of like my Doc, a very cool guy, tells me that our health care is in our own hands.   We should investigate, ask and question.   The same should be said for purchasing a property.

You should and can rely on your agent for sure, but ultimately you should be looking out for yourself as well.  

Back to the question.    Is this house haunted and will you buy it?

Let Us Reserve The Word Hero For Those That Have Actually Earned It

Veteran's Day 2012

Today is the day we celebrate our Veterans as true American heroes.  They have earned it with their service to our country.   Many have paid with their lives.   Many have lost a piece of themselves in service.   These people are the folks we should reserve the word hero for.     We mark November 11 as the day we officially thank these men and women for their service to the USA. 

The Good Times

Folks of my generation have seen it all OR rather, have seen some very strange times.      Many, if not most of us, had a parent or two in the Armed Services during WWII or the Korean Conflict.    In our young years, Veterans were honored and looked up too.   They were our role models.   They were our heroes.   Real heroes.   They earned the title and everyone knew it.  

and, The Bad Times

Then came the Vietnam war.    The draft was in full swing.   We watched and waited as numbers came up.    We saw our friends off to war and many of them come home in bags and sometimes worse.   The horror of it all was brought to us nightly, in color, on T.V. where the body count was dutifully announced.   

The country became deeply divided.  We saw and lived through and many even participated in war protests.    Friends and family fell on one side of the fence or another and most had very strong beliefs.  
We did not respect these Veterans as heroes.   For a fact, people yelled at and spit on folks in uniform.     It was a dark time.  We should never forget it.

and, Back to The Good Times

THANK GOD we have turned the corner again.    I don't know if it was the horror 911 that woke us up or what, but things have changed.    The United States has men and women in harms way in different parts of the world.    Once again we have a renewed respect for our men and women of the Armed Services. 

We have come full circle and appreciate and try to understand their sacrifice to this country.   We should never repeat the mistakes we made as a country and a people during the Vietnam Era in blaming the warriors for the war.

And, as we thank these Veterans, as a nation, we owe it to them, the ones that stand tall for us, to protect their benefits and to take care of  them when they are in need of help.  


As we thank them for their service, let us remember to reserve the word hero for those that have actually earned it.

Marine Corps Birthday November 10 2012

November 10, 2012 marks the 237th "birthday" of the United States Marine Corps.   Marines all over the world will take time out to celebrate this event with ceremonies, balls and the like.

It is no surprise to anyone that  has been reading my blogs for sometime that I am a proud former member of the United States Marine Corps.    

But, what you might not know is that I have been a Marine since I was born.   Yes, my Dad, Armando Palmieri was a Marine during WWII and also the Korean Conflict.    (P.S. If you click that link it will bring you to a really cool story. )    I was born shortly after that.

As a child I remember hearing the Marine Corps Hymn long before I remember hearing Mary had a Little Lamb.

Who the hell knows what my first words actually were!!    I laugh loudly at that.   I also feel an immense bit of pride at the thought of, instead of hearing nursery rhymes, hearing and feeling the esprit de corps that was to run through my veins for years.   I most certainly was a Marine before they actually pinned the Eagle, Globe and Anchor on my lapel!

Today... November 10... is the day that all Marines know to be the birthday of their Corps.   It is the day when they give to each other that knowing nod, and you might hear those that know them say,

Semper Fi... Happy Birthday Marine.    

The history of the Marine Corps
is important to us all, not just to those that have served, but for those that appreciate the freedoms that the United States has to offer. 

We can never really know the sacrifices of those who have served, but we can appreciate that which we know.

Art Sale and Exhibit Norwood MA Saturday November 10th

The Norwood Art Association (NAA) invites all to their annual Holiday Art Sale
Saturday November 10th from 10-2 at the Civic Center at 165 Nahatan Street in Norwood, MA.   

The Norwood Art association has been in existence since 1978 and with a volunteer board,  consists of local artists from Norwood, Walpole, Canton, and surrounding communities all the way to Bellingham!    Their goal is to encourage and promote the arts and provide a community for artists to share and learn.       The association holds demonstrations by a different artists each month and all are invited to attend these informative and fun events!     One does not have to be an artist to join... just have an interest!   

Back to the sale. 

Each year they hold two exhibits and sales, one being in the spring/summer and the other always a delight right before the holidays.  

These fine, dedicated artists will be showing their original works of art.   Watercolor, Oil, Acrylic, Pastel and Charcoal and Photography works will be displayed throughout the Civic Center.    There will also be prints and cards for sale as well as items in a "sacrifice bin".  

Not in the market for a painting?  Come anyway.   

Many of the artists will be on hand to meet and greet.  It is always very interesting and a fun thing to do to go by and see what these folks have been up too. 

Our communities are full of local talent.    Here is your chance to get out and have some fun, maybe purchase a unique gift or two and support your local artists at the same time!

Walpole MA Elementary School holds Mock Election

I know most people are like me and sick of hearing about politics, but this is a bit different, I find pretty cool and felt the need to share.  

I received a blog post from Nancy Carroll a Walpole MA teacher at the Boyden Elementary School this morning.    It was a wonderful post highlighting the children holding a mock election.    I thought what fun and a great hands on way to learn the election process and become interested and involved in the election process at such a young age.  


You can read her post here.   Teaching is Elementary.    I actually subscribe to this blog and find it so interesting and enlightening to learn what the kids today are learning and how they are doing it.    Why not subscribe too? 

It started out just like our actual elections (only not as costly!)..

with campaign signs that the kids made up.  They adorned the school and the kids were holding them during the "election hours".   They actually had a check off process similar to that which I will be going through shortly.     The voting booths were set up with privacy screens just like my voting place and the most fun she says was the use of an antique vote counting machine on checkout! 
  
I will not tell you the results of their election, you will have to go on and read for yourself!    Election results.  

Walpole people, your teachers are really great and I am sure you are very proud of the work that they and the students are doing! 

A really big high five goes out to the Boyden School Walpole MA teachers!
